Autumn Webworm
Hyphantria cunea

(Drury, 1773) 2062a* / 72.0211

This moth caught in Trumpington on 13.v.2014 was confirmed (by the then CMR) as the first record for the United Kingdom. A male. It Precedes the one caught in Hertfordshire by 5 months, although not confirmed until the October. Luckily the specimen was retained by Chris Thurgood at the time of capture.

The hind wings are very unusual as the description given is completely white hind-wings. Notice the abdomen has no yellow colouring or scaling and is much smaller than White Ermine.

The British common name seems to be Autumn Webworm, but known worldwide as the Fall Webworm, that's when the caterpillars make nests of various bushes in the USA.

Retained Specimen / Photograph will be Required.

Recorded in 1 (3%) of 37 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 2014.
